DELAWARE – March 10, 2025 – Acker’s third La Paulée auction, held on Thursday, March 6, and Saturday, March 8, skyrocketed to $13.3 million in sales, a monumental 33% higher than expected, including an impressive 247 New World Records. The auction marked the culmination of two weeks of celebrations in San Francisco and New York, honoring twenty-five years of La Paulée, the world’s greatest Burgundy wine celebration. The market exploded, with collectors battling fiercely for rare selections from distinguished cellars, including the final offering from the personal collection of legendary importer, wine icon, and dear friend of Acker, Martine Saunier. In a poignant tribute to her enduring legacy, bidders drove prices to unprecedented heights, pushing the total for Martine’s collection to $2.75 million—an astounding 150% above initial estimates. Also on offer were wines direct from eighteen of Burgundy’s greatest Domaines, including Joseph Drouhin, Bachelet-Monnot, Ballot-Millot, Antoine Jobard, Alex Moreau, Pierre Morey, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Camille Thiriet, Thibault Clerget, Henri Gouges, Hubert Lignier, Pierre Duroché, Loic Dugat-Py, Jean-Marie Fourrier, Faiveley, Etienne De Montille, Comte Liger-Belair, and Domaine Dujac. Demand was undeniable, as the domaine-direct selections also shattered expectations, soaring 110% above estimates.
Henri Jayer dominated the Top Ten Lots, with half coming from Martine’s legendary collection, including the auction’s three highest-selling lots. The top lot of the sale—six magnums of 1993 Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux in OCB—achieved an outstanding $350,000, blowing past estimates. In second place, twelve bottles of 2001 Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux in OCB fetched a staggering $275,000, followed by four bottles of the 1991 vintage in third place, realizing a monumental $162,500, over $40,000 a bottle! DRC secured fourth place, with six magnums of 1999 La Tache selling for $137,500, while fifth place was a tie between three bottles of 1978 Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux and six bottles of the 1993 vintage, both from Martine, and each garnering $106,250. The seventh position also saw a tie, with twelve bottles of 1999 DRC La Tache and six bottles of 2001 Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux bringing in $100,000 apiece. In ninth place, three bottles of 2005 DRC Romanee Conti in OWC captured $68,750, while the final spot saw a three-way tie at $62,500 between three bottles of 1999 DRC Romanee Conti, a twelve-bottle 2001 DRC Assortment in banded OWC, and a rare magnum of 1978 Jayer Richebourg, the only Jayer lot in the Top Ten not from Martine.
Eighteen consignments direct from some of Burgundy’s top Domaines generated tremendous excitement, resulting in a notable 77 New World Records. These cellar selections culminated in a special offering from Domaine Dujac, which opened one of the greatest libraries in all of Burgundy to release extraordinary vintages dating back to 1978. This remarkable selection drew intense competition, led by three bottles of 1978 Clos St. Denis and three bottles of 1978 Clos de la Roche, each achieving $56,250. A jeroboam of 1980 Clos de la Roche followed closely, selling for $47,500, while six bottles of the 1999 vintage realized $30,000. Other standout results included a magnum of 1980 Clos St. Denis, which brought in $21,250, and three bottles of 1978 Charmes-Chambertin, which achieved $17,500. Eleven of the seventeen lots in the Dujac offering set New World Records, including all the forementioned wines.
